Witness Coaching

From Dr. Michael Alexander, the author of Survive and Thrive on the Witness Stand

There are a number of reasons why someone might find themselves on the witness stand:

o Criminal Cases
o Civil Cases
o Contract Disputes
o Discrimination suits
o Wrongful Dismissal suits
o Regulatory Proceedings
o State and Federal or Congressional Investigations
o Divorce
o Custody Trials

If you are, or who will soon be a witnesses, or if you are a lawyer who needs to train and support an inexperienced witnesses, it helps to have an experienced witness coach on your side.

Being a witness can be a frightening experience. Many people are nervous from the moment they are told that they will be a witness. Others feel confident until they actually get on the witness stand and are surprised by what the actual experience is. And, alas, some feel confident that "I got this," only to discover that they are very wrong.

New witnesses are often told "Just tell the truth and you will be fine." Telling the truth is an important rule, but it is only one of many rules. Going on the witness stand with "just tell the truth and you will be fine" is the equivalent of going to a high stakes poker game only knowing that having a pair is a good thing. It isn't enough.

If you want to win a case, you need the tools. Michael Alexander, is an experienced witness coach with over 25 years of experience. He can train you for success on the stand. This involves

o giving you a realistic understanding of being a witness is actually like
o training you to prepare yourself mentally for the stand
o Teaching you to anticipate the questions you will be asked, and how to respond to both the questions you expected and to those you did not.

My Background

I have spent over 25 years as an expert witness and has filed written and oral testimony in over 175 cases. It is a job that I love and, for me, it is a lot of fun. My family has been involved in theatre for generations, I love a good argument, and I being a game player by nature, I have all of the advantages to make being a witness comfortable and fun. I also trained many others, colleagues and students to be witnesses, including coaching an award winning Mock Trial team of middle school students.

But, it would be a mistake to assume that when I started as a witness I could just sit down on the witness stand without learning the necessary skills. It would also be a mistake to assume that you cannot learn them yourself. With the help of a good coach, you can be an effective and successful witness
